01Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how Signal Quest collects, uses, stores and protects your information. It applies to all services — Android application, website, associated APIs and social features — in accordance with the GDPR and applicable French law.
The data controller is Meovo (Alexandre Germain, sole proprietorship), SIREN 105 419 915, 30 Avenue Maréchal Foch, Bureau 3, 69006 Lyon (France). For any request relating to your data: privacy@signalquest.fr.
02Data collected
2.1Identification and account
- Email address — authentication and important communications
- Username — public identifier visible to the community
- Password — stored hashed with bcrypt, never in clear text
- Avatar, role (user / moderator / admin) and FCM token for Android push notifications
The email address, username and password are required to create and manage the account: without them, the account cannot be created (Art. 13(2)(e) GDPR).
2.2GPS location
- Coverage sessions, speed tests, validations and geolocated photos
- Live Share — shared with your friends if you explicitly enable it
- Location history — detection of frequent areas, can be deleted at any time
On Android, background location is never requested automatically: it is only offered if you voluntarily enable the “Background Live” mode, which can be switched off at any time, with a visible service notification.
2.3Mobile network data (Android)
Collected through the TelephonyManager API: signal quality (RSRP, RSRQ, RSSI, SNR, SS-RSRP, SS-SINR…), cell identification (Cell ID, eNB, gNB, PCI, TAC, LAC), frequencies (EARFCN, NR-ARFCN, bands, Carrier Aggregation), technology (2G→5G SA), operator (MCC/MNC), Timing Advance and NQS Score.
Phone number · Contacts · SMS / personal messages · Call logs · Installed applications · IMEI identifier
2.4 – 2.8Performance, messaging, social, media, gamification
- Speed test — throughput, ping, latency, jitter, connection type, device model; each test, public or private
- Messaging — content encrypted end to end; public key on our servers, private key encrypted locally (PBKDF2, 210,000 iterations); attachments, reactions, scheduled/ephemeral messages; SRTP calls via LiveKit
- Social — friendships, blocks, presence status (configurable), custom status, message privacy
- Photos & media — cell tower photos (moderated), EXIF metadata if present, reactions, comments, reports
- Gamification — points, level, badges, public leaderboard, consecutive days, event history
- Trusted devices — WebAuthn public key (Passkey/PRF) or Android Keystore; private keys never leave your device. Bug reports — technical context, screenshots attached voluntarily
2.9Android permissions & diagnostics
| Permission | Use | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Location (fine / coarse) | Map, sessions, speed tests, Live Share, areas | Necessary (measurement & mapping) |
| Phone / radio state | Reading radio and cell information | Necessary (network metrics) |
| Camera / Microphone / Media | Cell tower photos, voice messages, calls | Optional, when used |
| Notifications & technical logs | Push, security, diagnosis and bug fixing | Optional / limited to what is needed |
An Android permission is not, on its own, a legal basis under the GDPR. Where processing relies on consent, that consent is requested in addition to the system’s technical permission.
03Use of data
We use your data only for: collaborative mapping, authentication and security, gamification, aggregated network statistics, messaging and calls, configurable notifications, moderation and improvement of the service.
- Sell your data to third parties
- Use your data for targeted or personalised advertising
- Share your location with advertisers
- Access the content of your end-to-end encrypted messages (technically impossible)
- Track you outside the application or share your data without consent
04Legal basis (GDPR)
In accordance with the GDPR, each processing operation relies on an explicit legal basis:
GPS collection for sessions and Live Share · Call recording · Voice transcription · Optional camera/microphone features
Account creation and management · Provision of the features (map, messaging, calls, export, gamification)
Moderation and abuse prevention · Security · Logging · Incident diagnosis · Service improvement. These processing operations rely on a balancing of our interests against your rights and freedoms; you may object to them (see “Your rights”).
Retention of connection logs · Responding to requests from competent authorities
05Data sharing
5.1Public vs private data
Username, avatar · Points, level, badges, leaderboard · Contributions to the map (coverage, public speed tests, validations) · Approved photos · Comments
Email, hashed password · Location history · Messages, conversations, E2EE keys · Trusted devices · Friends / blocks · Raw network data · Private reports
5.2Service providers
These providers process your data only on our behalf, under data processing agreements (DPAs) compliant with the GDPR:
| Provider | Use | Location |
|---|---|---|
| OVH VPS + Coolify | Web hosting, PostgreSQL, orchestration | France (EU) |
| Firebase / Google | FCM push notifications & Crashlytics | EU / US (DPF / SCC) |
| LiveKit | Audio/video infrastructure for calls | EU |
| SMTP / Resend (fallback) | Transactional emails | France (EU); US if fallback |
| AWS (S3 / CloudFront) | Object storage & speed test file | EU; US possible (DPF / SCC) |
| Stripe Payments Europe | Payments, invoices and receipts | Ireland (EU); US (DPF / SCC) |
| Google Play Billing | In-app purchases & Android subscriptions | Ireland (EU); US (DPF / SCC) |
| Google AdMob | NON-personalised rewarded ads (no advertising ID, no targeting); consent via UMP | Ireland (EU); US (DPF / SCC) |
| Groq | Transcription of voice messages (Whisper), at the request of the message’s author | US (SCC) |
| Mistral AI | Cell tower name suggestion and natural-language search: technical context of the site and text of the query | France (EU) |
DPF: EU-US Data Privacy Framework. SCC: Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission.
These two providers receive only what the requested action requires, and only when it is requested: Groq receives the audio file of a voice message when its author asks for a transcription; Mistral receives the technical context of a site (radio identifiers, municipality) or the text of a search query. Neither receives your messages, your location history or your account data, and neither is called in the background.
User identifier, email, amounts, anti-fraud metadata. Card numbers are entered directly with Stripe (PCI-DSS Level 1) and are never received or stored by Meovo. Legal basis: performance of a contract (6(1)(b)) and legitimate interest in fraud prevention (6(1)(f)). Retention in line with accounting obligations (10 years, Art. L123-22 of the French Commercial Code).
06Data retention
We keep your data only as long as strictly necessary for the purposes for which it was collected and, where applicable, to comply with our legal obligations (accounting, security). At the end of these periods, data is deleted or irreversibly anonymised.
| Type of data | Period |
|---|---|
| User account | Until the account is deleted; an account inactive for 18 months may be closed (Terms, section 11) |
| Coverage points | 5 years (then anonymised) |
| Speed tests | 3 years (then anonymised) |
| Messages & conversations | Until deleted manually |
| Location history (areas) | Rolling 6 months, then automatic deletion |
| Connection logs | 30 days |
| Bug reports | Resolution + 6 months of archiving |
| Revoked trusted devices | Purged automatically after 90 days |
What happens to measurements when an account is deleted. The coverage measurements and speed tests you record (position, technology, signal level, throughput, timestamp) remain linked to your account for the periods above, and are then irreversibly anonymised. If you delete your account before these deadlines, your measurements are immediately dissociated from any identity and kept in this anonymised form for the benefit of the community map. You can export your data at any time (Settings › Privacy) or request the complete erasure of your measurements — before or after deleting your account — by writing to privacy@signalquest.fr.
07Your rights (GDPR)
In accordance with the GDPR, you have the following rights over your personal data, whatever your country of residence:
Right of access
View all your data from your profile
Portability
Export your data in JSON format via “My data”
Rectification
Edit your profile, email or name at any time
Erasure
Delete your account and the associated data
Objection & restriction
Refuse or suspend certain processing (legitimate interest)
Withdrawal of consent
At any time, for optional processing
Complaint to the CNIL
You may lodge a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority, or with the authority of your country of residence if you consider the processing non-compliant (Art. 77 GDPR), without prejudice to any other remedy
Post-mortem directives
Decide what happens to your data after your death and entrust their execution to a third party (Art. 85 of the French Data Protection Act, Loi Informatique et Libertés)
Contact us at privacy@signalquest.fr. We reply within 30 days at most (extended to 3 months for complex requests, with prior notice).
08Data security
- Encryption in transit — HTTPS / TLS 1.3 for all communications
- Passwords — bcrypt hashing with salt, never in clear text · HttpOnly + SameSite=Lax tokens
- Messaging E2EE — keys generated on the client side; our servers cannot read your messages · private keys in the Keystore / WebAuthn
- Database — restricted-access PostgreSQL, encrypted connections, encrypted daily backups · OVH VPS hosting in France · SRTP calls via LiveKit
In the event of a personal data breach, we notify the CNIL within 72 hours where it is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms (Art. 33 GDPR). Where it is likely to result in a high risk to you, we inform you without undue delay (Art. 34 GDPR), unless the data concerned was protected by appropriate measures such as encryption.
10International transfers
Signal Quest’s main infrastructure is operated from France (OVH). However, some features rely on providers that may process data in the United States.
Google / Firebase (FCM push, Crashlytics, AdMob) and Amazon Web Services (S3 / CloudFront) are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (European Commission adequacy decision of 10 July 2023). For providers not covered by that decision (e.g. Groq or the Resend fallback), transfers are governed by the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC) approved by the European Commission. A copy of these safeguards can be obtained on request from privacy@signalquest.fr (Art. 13(1)(f) GDPR).
11Protection of minors
In France, Signal Quest is intended primarily for people aged 15 and over. Below that age, any use involving processing based on consent requires the consent of the holder of parental responsibility.
If we discover that a minor’s data has been collected in breach of the applicable rules, we will take the necessary measures (deletion or restriction of the account). Report such cases to privacy@signalquest.fr.
12Changes
We may change this Policy to reflect changes in our practices or in legal requirements. In the event of a substantial change, you will be informed by email, in-app notification and a banner on the site. The updated version takes effect as soon as it is published.
